Hockey games are divided into three periods of play, with each period lasting 20 minutes at the professional level, such as in the NHL (National Hockey League). In short, hockey has three periods of play, and if the game is tied after the third, it goes into overtime and possibly a shootout in the regular season, creating an exciting finish for fans.
