Prom or graduation night: is hiring a chauffeur-driven car worth it on a student budget?

Hi everyone, my prom is coming up and my friends and I have started talking about how we want to arrive. Most people are just getting taxis or lifts from parents, but a few of us are thinking about splitting the cost of a proper car, something like a Rolls-Royce or Bentley with a chauffeur.

I’ve been looking at a few Essex and London companies, including Dorchester Luxury Cars, and it seems like some offer hire by the hour, which might work if we share between a group. I’m just not sure if it’s a sensible use of money or if we’d regret it.

Here’s what I’m trying to work out:

  • Cost: how much would it come to per person if four or five of us split it?
  • Hours: how long do you actually need the car for? Just the arrival, or the whole evening?
  • Photos: does a nice car really make a difference to the pictures?
  • Space: how many people can fit comfortably, especially in dresses and suits?
  • Booking: how early should we reserve, and do we need a deposit?

For anyone who has done this at prom, a graduation ball or a uni formal:

  1. Was it worth the money, or did it feel like too much?
  2. How many of you shared the car, and how did you split the cost?
  3. Did you hire by the hour or get a set package?
  4. Is there anything you’d do differently?

I’d also love cheaper ideas if hiring a car isn’t realistic. Maybe a vintage car for just the arrival photos? Any tips would be great, thanks!
