What licenses are required to launch a crypto futures platform in the US?

If you’re launching a crypto futures platform in the US, the main regulator to look at is the CFTC.

If you operate the actual futures exchange, you’ll generally need CFTC approval as a Designated Contract Market (DCM).

You’ll also need proper clearing arrangements, either through your own registered Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) or an approved clearing provider.

If you handle customer trades or funds, you may need to be registered as a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM).

An Introducing Broker (IB) registration may apply if your business only brings customers and orders to the platform.

Depending on the setup, other registrations can apply, including CPO, CTA, or Swap Dealer.

The exact licenses depend heavily on your business model, so get US derivatives counsel involved before launching.
